From the start of her clinical practice she knew that she wanted to be a pediatric dentist due to her great passion for working with children and teens. When should my child first see a dentist?
By their first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth coming through. Early visits are short, gentle, and mostly about getting your child comfortable. We check for early signs of decay, talk through feeding and teething, and answer your questions. Starting early prevents problems down the line.
How often should children visit the dentist?
Every six months is the standard recommendation for most children. Some children with a higher risk of cavities may benefit from more frequent visits. Dr. Enas will advise you on what is right for your child after the first assessment.
Why do baby teeth matter if they fall out anyway?
Baby teeth hold space in the jaw for the permanent teeth growing underneath. If a baby tooth is lost too early, the surrounding teeth can drift, causing crowding and misalignment that may need orthodontic treatment later. Healthy baby teeth also help your child eat properly, speak clearly, and feel confident.
What is minimally invasive dentistry for children?
It means using the least amount of treatment needed to solve the problem. Instead of drilling first, we explore options like remineralisation, fluoride treatments, and Silver Diamine Fluoride to stop decay without removing tooth structure. We only intervene further when it is genuinely necessary.
What is Silver Diamine Fluoride and is it safe?
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a liquid applied to decayed areas of a tooth to stop the decay from progressing. It is quick, painless, and requires no drilling. It is safe and has been used in dentistry for decades. The main consideration is that it turns the treated area dark, which is something we always discuss with parents beforehand.
My child is very anxious about the dentist. What can you do?
Dental anxiety in children is very common, and it is something Dr. Enas works with every day. She uses a calm, child-centred approach with simple language and no surprises. For children who need extra support, we offer dental sedation options including nitrous oxide (happy gas) and IV sedation where appropriate. We will always discuss the best approach with you first.
Do you treat children with special needs?
Yes. Dr. Enas has extensive experience with children who have sensory sensitivities, autism, Down syndrome, ADHD, and other conditions that make standard dental care difficult. We take the time to understand each child's individual needs and adapt our approach accordingly. No child is too complex for us to see.
What happens if my child needs a filling?
We always start by exploring the least invasive option. If a filling is needed, we use tooth-coloured materials and work at a pace your child is comfortable with. For children who are very anxious or very young, we may recommend sedation to make the experience easier for everyone. We will walk you through exactly what to expect before we begin.
